Arranger
Berend has crafted over a hundred arrangements for big bands, symphony orchestras, wind bands, choirs, and more. His notable clients include the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw, Nederlands Studenten Jazz Orkest (2017-2023), ArtEZ Pop Orchestra, Conservatorium of Amsterdam Tuesday Big Band, Conservatorium of Amsterdam Thursday Big Band, Utrechtse Studenten Bigband, Dutch Jazz Choir, and Studenten Bigband Nijmegen. He has collaborated with esteemed artists such as Bart van Lier, Jan van Duikeren, and Seamus Blake.
Recent projects include writing arrangements for Douwe Bob with the Nationaal Jeugd Orkest, Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw featuring Jeangu Macrooy, Gabe Kruse, and SMANDEM., Monday Bigband featuring Jasper Blom, Vortex Ensemble, Nederlands Studenten Jazz Orkest 2024, Jeugdsymfonieorkest Vuurvogel Zwolle, Orkest Koninklijke Luchtmacht featuring Shirma Rouse, Phion featuring Shirma Rouse, and Tinase featuring Marshall Gilkes. Berend studies with Rob Horsting and has participated in workshops led by Grammy Award-winning and nominated artists such as Jim McNeely, Miho Hazama, Marshall Gilkes, and Dick Oatts.
Conductor
Since 2016, Berend has been at the helm of large ensembles performing Jazz and Pop music. He has led hundreds of rehearsals and numerous shows and projects, working with ensembles ranging from 10 to 50 musicians. His expertise spans rhythm sections, woodwinds, brass, string instruments, and vocals. Berend is acclaimed for his progressive vision and effective leadership. He currently conducts the Studenten Bigband Nijmegen and the Nederlands Studenten Jazz Orkest 2023, with whom he recently completed a week-long tour. Musician
In addition to his arranging and conducting talents, Berend is a skilled musician, proficient in bass guitar and keyboards. His playing is characterized by a strong focus on groove and color. Berend’s versatility allows him to seamlessly integrate into various musical settings, enhancing the overall sound and feel of the ensemble.
Mix Engineer
Berend’s passion for sound began in his youth, experimenting with DAWs and recording with friends. He has since honed his skills as a mix engineer, specializing in large ensemble recordings. Recent mixing projects include work for the Nederlands Studenten Jazz Orkest and Studenten Bigband Nijmegen, as well as producing the debut album for the Chris Muller Bigband.
